Vegan Slovenia: Is Slovenia Good for Vegans?

Yes! It’s safe to say I was impressed by how vegan-friendly Slovenia is – especially the capital, Ljubljana.

Where plant-based milk is a common request and it took me a quick google to find vegan Slovenian dumplings and Bled cream cake, I had no problem enjoying the delicious food Slovenia has to offer.

Vegan Ljubljana: Best Places to Eat

Not only does Ljubljana have heaps of green space (especially due to the massive Park Tivoli) and the city centre is car free – it’s also a great place to be vegan. Here’s the run-down on all the best Ljubljana vegan-friendly spots this small capital has to offer:

Veganika (100% vegan)

This restaurant makes it to the top of my list of best vegan restaurants, Ljubljana. Perfect for an evening meal, the food was delicious and the vibes were impeccable: on a cute street with friendly waiting staff and a welcoming atmosphere. They have a beautiful range of dishes, from traditional Slovenian food to those inspired by other parts of the world.

Barbarella Juicebar (100% vegan)

This vegan cafe, Ljubljana, is a great place to stop at for lunch. This plant-based gem offers lunch (including sandwiches), drinks, desserts and outdoor seating (and takeaway options) – a highlight is their vegan quiche!

Vegansko (100% vegan)

Ljubljana even has a vegan supermarket! Vegansko is mostly an online store but they have a vegan shop in Ljubljana, so you can pop in and get some vegan goodies.

Pritličje

This LGBTQ+ friendly cultural hub in the centre of the city not only hosts music events in the evening, but is a chilled spot during the day for lunch and coffee. They do some vegan toasted sandwiches as well as lots of vegan friendly drinks.

Outdoor Market

Okay, don’t roll your eyes when I’m offering you fruits and vegetables as a vegan option – hear me out. Every Friday from March ‘till October there’s an outdoor market offering fresh produce from the local countryside. Make sure to check out these beautiful displays of fruits and veg all locally grown in Slovenia and a great snack while you stroll around the city.

Top tip in Ljubljana: While no cars are allowed in the city centre, you can hop on an electric-powered Kavalir (Gentle Helper) for free! These mini-vehicles that look like golf-carts are especially helpful for those with mobility issues.

Vegan Bled: Best Places to Eat

When visiting Lake Bled, I found it a little more difficult to find vegan options. However, here are two vegan-friendly restaurants near the lake, plus some vegan Bled tips at the end:

Public and Vegan Kitchen Bled (100% vegan)

In search of a vegan restaurant, Bled? This old-style pub at Lake Bled does some fantastic pub-grub. Don’t forget to leave room for their vegan bled cream cake – my friend who’s not vegan couldn’t believe that it was fully plant-based.

Pizzeria Gallus

Craving some vegan pizza? Don’t we all! This local Bled pizzeria offers some vegan pizzas – yes even with vegan cheese. It’s worth calling ahead to double check they are not out of vegan options on the day.

Vegan Tips Lake Bled

Sadly there aren’t as many vegan restaurants in Bled to choose from, compared to Ljubljana, so here are a few extra tips on being vegan in Lake Bled:

  • Stay in accommodation with a kitchen: We mostly cooked in the apartment during our stay. The local supermarket, Mercator, was okay for vegan options – they had some vegan pesto and yoghurt and of course fresh fruits and veg and other basic ingredients. There is also a DM (Drogerie Markt) further into Bled which has a range of whole-foods and vegan snacks.

  • Make a packed lunch: Most days we bought ingredients for sandwiches and brought that with us to sit by the lake. I made a really nice avocado and pesto baguette with ingredients from Mercator.

  • Vegan sorbets: There were a few ice-cream stands around Lake Bled which offered vegan sorbets. Apparently Jodlar Ice-Cream has some vegan options but I didn’t get a chance to go.

  • Plant-based milk: Ordering coffee with plant-based milk is still no problem in Bled, every cafe seemed to have it on the menu (although some with an extra fee).
